When planning a summer vacation, or any trip for that matter, add protecting your home to the list. Your home is one of your most important investments, and you don’t want to end a wonderful vacation coming home to an unpleasant surprise.
Follow these tips and then head off on vacation confident that your home is secure and protected.
Set timers on lights: Don’t risk a break-in while you are away. Set a timer for interior and exterior lights so that your home does not appear vacant.
Avoid power surges: Disconnect all TVs, computer, stereo equipment and other electronics. Another option is to make certain they are plugged into a surge protector.
Check for leaks: If a pipe bursts while you are on vacation the damage can be significant. Check hoses to the refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machines and ice makers. Replace any old or damaged hoses Look under sinks, water heaters and seals around windows for any potential leak issues.
Protect your pipes: Check the insulation in the attic, basement and crawlspace especially if traveling in the winter.
Stop newspapers and mail: Nothing says you aren’t home like a driveway piled with newspapers or a full mailbox. Ask a neighbor to collect these for you or pause delivery with the post office.
Don’t leave the spare keys outside: Thieves know all the hiding spots. Give a key to a trusted neighbor if they are checking on your house. If not, don’t risk theft – just bring the keys inside.
