Fall weather can be the perfect time to enjoy the porch. Make the most of your outdoor area with fall décor that doesn’t have to be expensive. We’ve listed some ideas to up your porch game and a few fall maintenance items to help keep your home it’s best.
HANG A FALL WREATH
Hanging a wreath is so easy and you can keep it as simple or as over the top as you like. Fall leaves, magnolias, pumpkins and burlap ribbon are always nice together. Add a few pieces for Halloween that can be taken out and then you have a nice display to take you through Thanksgiving.
PUMPKINS AND MUMS
Nothing says fall like pumpkins and mums. They can be inexpensive and last through November. Carve only a few pumpkins for Halloween and enjoy the rest the entire fall season. Place a large pumpkin or stack 2-3 flat pumpkins in a planter in place of plants. Arrange more pumpkins and baskets of mums on the porch floor around the planter. A variety of white, gray and orange pumpkins look beautiful with colorful mums. Gourds look great mixed in too. Don’t forget the walkway!
DRIED FLORALS AND BALES OF STRAW
Dried hydrangea blooms from your garden, corn stalks, cottom stems from a farmers market or craft store, and fall leaves from your own trees make lovely arrangements for the porch. Place in baskets on top of straw bales, milk jars or tuck into a wreath. Straw bales are perfect for displaying pumpkins and flowers or throw an autumn inspired cloth over one and use it as a table for drinks and snacks. They can be uneven so place your pumpkin spiced beverages in a tray before setting them on a straw bale. Charming and purposeful!
PAINT YOUR PUMPKINS
Get creative with your pumpkins! Paint or write your monogram, house number, favorite football team, or your state’s silhouette. Find a stencil and have fun with it! There are also plenty of tutorials found online. They don’t have to be carved!
Leaving too many leaves on the ground can inhibit grass growth plus it can look unsightly. Call the family out and rake up the leaves into a big pile to jump in of course. Rake into lawn bags and then relax with cider on your beautiful porch.
CLEAN GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS
Once the majority of the leaves have fallen make sure to clean your gutters. Clogged gutters can cause water to pool up which could damage your siding or roof.
ADD WEATHER STRIPPING
This is a chore to do before it gets too cold outside. Apply to the frames of windows and doors to keep the warm air inside the house. It can also help cut utility bills.
HAVE YOUR CHIMNEY CLEANED
Making sure your chimney is inspected and cleaned by a professional is an important safety measure. Enjoy those cozy fires without the worry!
